The Identity of Babylon the Great

To identify Babylon the Great found in Revelation 17 & 18 we have to do some scripture cross-referencing. First, note that in addition to a description of the woman Babylon in Revelation 17:3-5 and the beast she rides on in Revelation 17:7-17, we find in the 18th and final verse of Revelation 17 that the woman is a "great city." So, this immediately reduces our search to a city. But, as outlined in the table above, it's when you compare the description in Revelation to the description provided of Jerusalem in Ezekiel 16 that we see the consistency in description:

  • Purple & scarlet fine linen clothing is consistent with what God dresses the woman in Ezekiel 16 in. Likewise, it coincides with the clothing of the Jewish priests in Exodus 28.
  • Both Harlot Babylon and the woman of Ezekiel 16 are adorned with jewelry.
  • Both the Harlot Babylon and the woman of Ezekiel 16 are associated with pouring out lusts to their lovers.
  • The Harlot Babylon is described as riding a beast with 7 heads and we learn the heads are 5 fallen kingdoms, 1 that is, and 1 that will come. In this matter, consideration of when Revelation was written is a key detail. Revelation was written around 95 AD during the Roman occupation of Israel. Jerusalem has already been destroyed by the Romans at the time of writing. This makes two points:
    • β€” Revelation is not prophecy for the events leading up to the 70 AD destruction of Jerusalem.
    • β€” The most recent "lover" of Jerusalem up to that point is Rome. And, on this point we find the other kingdoms that have fallen are those spoken of in Daniel 2 and also a partial list in Ezekiel 16 and Jeremiah 25. These kingdoms/past lovers are kingdoms that conquested Israel β€” including Jerusalem.
    • β€” As a bonus, I also charted that we find this same typology in the story of the woman at the well in which Jesus highlights the woman has had 5 husbands, and the one she is currently with is not her husband.

With the context of Jerusalem as the woman being spoken of, the remaining information in Revelation 17 tells us a great deal about what is going to happen in the later portion of the Tribulation Period. See how I connect the beast she is riding on to the overarching procession of prophetic beasts on the Prophetic Beasts page.
